About this role

Fluidstack seeks a Fire Protection Engineer to own fire safety design across a portfolio of massive AI data centers, from concept through construction. You'll design suppression and detection systems, manage relationships with fire marshals and authorities having jurisdiction, and ensure code compliance on non-standard, mission-critical facilities.

What you'll do

  • Design and specify fire detection, alarm, and suppression systems (VESDA, addressable alarms, pre-action/wet pipe sprinklers, clean agent) across data center portfolio
  • Serve as primary liaison with fire marshals and AHJs; conduct plan reviews and negotiate code-compliant equivalencies for non-standard designs
  • Develop campus-level fire suppression strategy coordinating water supply, distribution, and system redundancy across multiple buildings and phases
  • Review and approve fire protection submittals, shop drawings, and third-party consultant designs for code compliance and consistency
  • Support system commissioning, resolve test failures, and provide fire protection input on retrofits and live-site remediation

What they're looking for

  • Fire detection and suppression system design (VESDA, sprinklers, clean agent)
  • NFPA 75, 76, and 2001 standards; FM Global data center requirements
  • AHJ negotiation and code compliance equivalencies
  • PE License in Fire Protection Engineering or NICET Level III/IV certification
  • Coordination with electrical, mechanical, and controls engineering
  • Technical writing and system documentation
  • Clean agent systems (FM-200, Novec 1230)
  • Hyperscale/colocation data center design experience

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through a fire protection design you led for a mission-critical facility and how you coordinated with electrical and mechanical teams to avoid late-stage integration issues.
  • Describe your experience negotiating code-compliant alternatives with fire marshals on a non-standard design—what was the challenge and how did you keep it off the critical path?
