FluidStack
Geotechnical Engineer, Data Center Design
About this role
Fluidstack seeks an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to lead subsurface investigation and foundation design across a multi-state portfolio of massive data center developments. You'll own the full geotechnical lifecycle—from site screening through construction support—partnering with structural, civil, and environmental teams to deliver 50+ GW of AI compute infrastructure at unprecedented speed and scale.
What you'll do
- Own geotechnical workstream across multi-site development portfolio from early screening through foundation design and construction support
- Scope and manage subsurface investigation programs including boring campaigns, CPT testing, lab work, and external consultant oversight
- Interpret subsurface data into design parameters and recommend foundation systems (shallow/deep foundations, ground improvement, pile selection)
- Develop site earthwork and grading strategy in coordination with civil engineers, managing cut/fill balance and settlement risk
- Conduct geotechnical fatal-flaw screening during site selection to identify karst, subsidence, groundwater, and soil expansion risks early
- Coordinate with environmental team on groundwater and contamination findings that impact foundation and subsurface decisions
What they're looking for
- Geotechnical site investigation and subsurface characterization
- Foundation design and ground improvement techniques (piles, rigid inclusions, surcharge, preload)
- Subsurface data interpretation and geotechnical report review
- Geotechnical consultant and lab management
- Grading, drainage, and earthwork design
- Soil mechanics (bearing capacity, settlement, liquefaction, expansive soils)
- Site due diligence and fatal-flaw screening
- Cross-functional collaboration with structural, civil, and environmental teams

Likely interview questions
- Walk us through a project where you identified a geotechnical fatal flaw that changed or killed a site—what was it and how did you catch it?
- Describe a time you disagreed with a geotechnical consultant's foundation recommendation. How did you challenge it and what was the outcome?
