About this role

Fluidstack seeks a Turbomachinery Engineer to lead R&D on centrifugal compressor and expansion turbine design for next-generation data center cooling infrastructure. You'll own aerodynamic design from concept through testing, set machine architecture decisions, and integrate rotordynamics and structural considerations at gigawatt scale.

What you'll do

  • Design centrifugal compressor aerodynamics from mean-line analysis through CFD to final impeller, diffuser, and return-channel geometry
  • Determine machine architecture including stage count, shaft speed, and diameter while evaluating working fluid tradeoffs
  • Design expansion turbine for shaft work recovery integrated with compressor on shared shaft
  • Conduct rotordynamics analysis, magnetic bearing integration, and stress analysis at high-speed operating conditions
  • Execute prototype testing and close feedback loop from measured performance maps back to aerodynamic design refinement
  • Collaborate with structural and mechanical engineers through build and commissioning phases
