Interplay
Motor / Electromechanical Applications Engineer, Vandrel
About this role
Vandrel Industries seeks an experienced motor engineer to bridge advanced magnet wire materials into customer motor and power system designs. You'll work directly with defense, aerospace, EV, and industrial customers to integrate Vandrel's PEEK-insulated copper wire, drive winding architecture decisions, and own technical qualification and commercialization.
What you'll do
- Translate wire material properties into measurable motor performance improvements (torque, thermal, efficiency, voltage rating)
- Lead technical engagement with customer engineering teams across defense, aerospace, EV, and industrial sectors
- Build thermal, electromagnetic, and dielectric models to quantify performance gains in motor topologies
- Define initial product specifications (conductor size, insulation thickness, temperature class) based on customer requirements
- Support qualification testing including HIPOT, partial discharge, thermal aging, and fluid compatibility
- Develop and present technical narratives explaining Vandrel wire advantages at material, motor, and system levels
What they're looking for
- Motor design and electrical machines (5+ years)
- Winding design and insulation systems (magnet wire, enamel, impregnation, slot liner)
- Thermal and dielectric analysis in high-power motors
- Cross-disciplinary thinking (materials to systems integration)
- Customer-facing technical communication and review leadership
- Defense, aerospace, or 800V+ high-speed motor experience (preferred)
- Power electronics or traction drive engineering
- Execution-focused mindset
Benefits
- Competitive base salary benchmarked to senior motor/electrification talent
- Material equity stake
- Co-founder-level package available (title, equity, authority) for qualified candidates
- Senior, hands-on team environment
- Direct impact on closing US magnet wire supply chain gap
- Ownership of commercial-technical strategy from day one
