Lightmatter
Electro-Optic Link Hardware Engineer
About this role
Lightmatter seeks a hands-on photonics engineer to verify and characterize high-speed electro-optic links for their advanced data center infrastructure. You'll perform lab measurements, debug hardware performance, build test automation, and collaborate across electrical, optical, and silicon teams to validate next-generation photonics components.
What you'll do
- Execute lab characterization and debug of high-speed electrical and optical hardware with focus on eye diagrams, BER, jitter, and equalization
- Measure and validate link budgets across process, voltage, and temperature corners, identifying gaps between models and silicon
- Build and correlate electrical, optical, and EO channel models against bench measurements
- Develop automation scripts for instrument control, data pipelines, and analysis to accelerate characterization workflows
- Support silicon bring-up and root-cause debugging in collaboration with analog, package, PCB, and SerDes engineering teams
- Document measurement setups, methods, and results for reproducibility and knowledge sharing
What they're looking for
- High-speed serial link characterization and debugging (56G/112G+)
- SerDes equalization techniques (CTLE, FFE, DFE) and signal integrity fundamentals
- Bench instrumentation: VNA, oscilloscopes (real-time and sampling), BERTs, TDRs
- Python or MATLAB for test automation and data analysis
- Silicon photonics or electro-optic link experience (preferred)
- Circuit simulation tools: ADS, HFSS, or equivalent (preferred)
- Channel measurement and de-embedding techniques (preferred)
- COM/IBIS-AMI modeling familiarity (preferred)
Benefits
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Retirement savings matching program
- Generous vacation, sick leave, and paid family leave
- Equity grants for full-time employees
- Life, disability, and accident insurance
- Flexible hybrid workplace model with commuter benefits

Likely interview questions
- Describe a time you debugged a high-speed link issue at the bench—what tools did you use and how did you isolate the root cause?
- Walk us through how you'd set up a measurement to characterize eye diagrams and BER for a 112G link from scratch.
