About this role

OpenAI seeks an experienced Data Center Design Engineer (Electrical) to lead the design, operation, and maintenance of large-scale AI infrastructure campuses. This role spans from site selection through buildout and ongoing operations, requiring deep expertise in MEP systems, critical equipment management, and vendor collaboration to deliver world-class data center facilities.

What you'll do

  • Oversee MEP design, operation, and maintenance across all project phases, reviewing drawings and technical proposals
  • Lead operational activities for large-scale data center campuses from early design through delivery and daily operation
  • Procure and manage critical equipment including generators, UPS systems, chillers, and cooling distribution units
  • Ensure integration of power, cooling, networking, and construction systems into cohesive data center design
  • Develop operational workflows from design requirements through commissioning, testing, and deployment readiness
  • Provide technical direction to internal teams and vendors while managing contractor relationships and quality assurance
