About this role

OpenAI's Hardware organization seeks an early-career Performance Modeling Engineer to develop and apply modeling tools that evaluate AI system performance and guide infrastructure decisions. You'll work with senior engineers to build frameworks, run simulations, and analyze tradeoffs across compute, memory, networking, and storage subsystems.

What you'll do

  • Develop and maintain performance modeling tools and frameworks for AI systems
  • Build models to evaluate behavior across compute, memory, networking, and interconnect subsystems
  • Analyze distributed system scaling and identify performance bottlenecks
  • Run simulations and analytical models to support architecture decisions
  • Validate models using benchmarking data and real system measurements
  • Collaborate with hardware, infrastructure, and architecture teams on design tradeoffs
