Software Engineer, ChatGPT Infrastructure

About this role

Join OpenAI's ChatGPT Infrastructure team to design and build platform systems that enable rapid iteration at scale. You'll create foundational abstractions, reliability guardrails, and developer tools that empower teams to ship changes safely and efficiently while managing high concurrency and unpredictable production demands.

What you'll do

• Build and evolve infrastructure platforms serving many engineering teams and services
• Design clean abstractions and APIs that translate real-world constraints into usable interfaces
• Drive reliability and performance improvements through principled design and measurement
• Partner with product and engineering teams to identify systemic pain points and develop reusable solutions
• Own outcomes end-to-end from design through implementation, rollout, and operational maturity
• Create golden paths and frameworks that standardize safe, fast iteration across the organization

• Distributed systems design and operation at large scale
• Performance analysis and optimization (latency, throughput, tail behavior)
• Reliability engineering (circuit breakers, rate limiting, load shedding, fault isolation)
• API and contract design for complex ecosystems
