OpenAI
Software Engineer, Silicon Design Methodology
About this role
OpenAI's Hardware organization seeks a software engineer to develop design methodologies, tools, and infrastructure that accelerate custom AI-native silicon development. You'll build high-quality software abstractions and automated workflows that improve velocity and confidence across architecture, design, verification, and systems teams.
What you'll do
- Develop and scale design methodologies for rapid first-party chip development
- Create abstractions for consistent representation of hardware structures, configurations, and results across tools
- Automate engineering workflows and improve reproducibility, observability, and testability
- Partner with architects, RTL designers, verification engineers, and systems software teams to gather requirements and implement solutions
- Use methodology and tooling to identify design risks early and accelerate iteration cycles
- Contribute across multiple aspects of silicon development as the program and methodology evolve
What they're looking for
- C++, Python, Rust, or similar systems-oriented programming languages
- Digital design and computer architecture understanding
- Engineering infrastructure and developer tools experience
- RTL and IP component integration into SoCs
- API, object model, and data model design for complex systems
- Multi-stage workflow automation and regression system building
- Cross-functional reasoning across architecture, design, verification, and performance modeling
- EDA/CAD tooling, simulation frameworks, compilers, or verification systems experience
