About this role

OpenAI is hiring a System Performance Engineer to optimize embedded AI hardware products by profiling, benchmarking, and tuning performance across operating systems, graphics, and vision components. You'll establish performance standards, develop measurement frameworks, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure products remain responsive and efficient from development through real-world deployment.

What you'll do

  • Develop system benchmarks and methodologies to evaluate end-to-end product performance
  • Profile and analyze performance across key use cases using custom and industry-standard tools
  • Identify bottlenecks and drive optimizations across the software stack with engineering teams
  • Define product KPIs and establish measurement frameworks for launch readiness
  • Monitor metrics including responsiveness, memory usage, boot time, stability, and thermal behavior
  • Investigate field performance regressions and drive data-driven resolution

What they're looking for

  • C/C++, Python, or Rust programming
  • Deep embedded systems and operating systems fundamentals
  • Profiling tools (Perfetto, GDB, LLDB, perf, ftrace, Instruments)
  • Linux, Android, or iOS platform experience
  • Real-time systems and latency/power/memory optimization
  • Performance instrumentation and analytics frameworks
  • Statistics and experimentation methodologies
  • Cross-functional collaboration and communication
