About this role
OpenAI is hiring a Systems Software Engineer to design and maintain low-level firmware and system software for first-party AI hardware, including BMC, Linux, and hardware diagnostics. You'll own software acceptance from partners, build automation and testing infrastructure, and guide platforms from prototype through production deployment in OpenAI's supercomputing environment.
What you'll do
- Design and develop firmware and system software for hardware manageability, BMC services, and platform drivers
- Own integration and acceptance of partner software releases, including code review, builds, CI, and launch readiness
- Build automation and CI infrastructure for lab testing and device management
- Debug hardware management protocols and interfaces across accelerators, controllers, and platform services
- Develop validation tests and monitoring for board bring-up, manufacturing, and production deployment
- Partner with hardware, firmware, and infrastructure teams to define software requirements and resolve cross-layer issues

- Low-level systems and firmware software development
- C, C++, or Rust programming
- Linux platforms, OpenBMC, BIOS/UEFI, and bootloaders
- Hardware interfaces: I2C, SMBus, PCIe, Ethernet, UART, JTAG
- Hardware debugging and lab tools
- Hardware bring-up and manufacturing testing
- CI/CD infrastructure and test automation
- Redfish and BMC software
