About this role

A renewable energy company developing ocean technology seeks a Mechanical Engineer to design robust mechanical components and assemblies for deep-sea systems that operate autonomously in extreme conditions. You'll own projects end-to-end—from requirements and CAD modeling through prototyping, testing, and deployment—while working collaboratively with technicians and cross-functional teams.

What you'll do

  • Design and analyze mechanical components, structures, enclosures, and fluid systems for ocean deployment
  • Create and maintain CAD models using NX and Teamcenter with detailed drawings and GD&T specifications
  • Perform structural analysis using hand calculations and validate designs through trade studies
  • Lead design reviews, document technical decisions, and drive engineering trade-offs
  • Direct technicians in prototyping, testing, fabrication, and operational procedure development
  • Support vendor relationships and travel to test sites as needed

What they're looking for

  • 3D CAD modeling (NX/Teamcenter preferred)
  • Structural analysis and hand calculations
  • Material selection (steel, aluminum, titanium, composites, plastics)
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Prototyping and hands-on fabrication experience
  • Technical communication and design documentation
  • Instrumentation and controls fundamentals
  • Programming/scripting (Python, MATLAB) for analysis

Benefits

  • Competitive salary: $125,000–$175,000
  • Company equity as a public benefit corporation backed by venture capital
  • 100% company-paid gold PPO health insurance for employee, partner, and dependents
  • Unlimited flexible paid time off and flexible working hours
  • 100% company-paid vision insurance and 100% coverage for partner/dependents' dental
  • Long-term disability insurance

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through a complete design cycle you've owned—from requirements through deployment. What challenges did you face and how did you solve them?
  • Tell us about a time you had to design something to withstand extreme or harsh environmental conditions. What analysis methods did you use?
