Redwood Materials
Substation Protection and Control Engineer, EPC
About this role
Redwood Materials is hiring a Substation Electrical Engineer to design and oversee high-voltage electrical infrastructure (69kV–345kV) for battery recycling and energy storage facilities. You'll lead substation design, perform grid studies, coordinate with utilities and ISOs, and serve as Electrical Engineer of Record for projects supporting the energy transition.
What you'll do
- Design high-voltage AC electrical systems for industrial substations (69kV–345kV) and their integration with transmission and distribution networks
- Perform grid simulation, stability studies, short-circuit, load-flow, and arc-flash analyses using tools like PSSE, PSLF, and ASPEN OneLiner
- Develop single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection schemes, relay coordination, and grounding plans
- Select and evaluate high-voltage equipment including switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, and protection relays
- Interface with utilities and ISO/RTOs for interconnection studies, permitting, and regulatory compliance
- Review existing substation designs and recommend improvements; serve as Electrical Engineer of Record and lead code compliance reviews
What they're looking for
- High-voltage substation design and AC systems
- Power system simulation software (PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, ASPEN OneLiner)
- Protection relay design and coordination (SEL AcSELerator)
- Short-circuit, load-flow, and arc-flash analysis
- Equipment selection and specification (switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers)
- Electrical codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, NESC, NFPA)
- Utility and ISO/RTO interconnection processes
- Grounding design and system stability analysis
