About this role

SpaceX seeks a Manufacturing Engineer to optimize inspection processes and design-for-manufacturability for Starship machining operations. You'll bridge engineering, production, and quality teams to enhance inspection efficiency, reduce cycle times, and maintain flight-readiness standards in a high-volume production environment.

What you'll do

  • Select and implement optimal inspection methods (CMMs, manual, automated systems) to maximize throughput and machine uptime
  • Develop automation opportunities and standardized processes to reduce inspection time and redundant checks
  • Maintain tight feedback loops between design, manufacturing, and quality teams to accelerate defect resolution
  • Refine engineering drawings with improved GD&T callouts and datum structures for repeatable measurements
  • Review out-of-tolerance conditions and approve dispositions to keep production flowing efficiently
  • Lead root cause investigations on non-conformances and implement corrective actions across the machine shop

What they're looking for

  • CMM and precision metrology systems (3D imaging, Keyance)
  • GD&T and inspection procedures
  • CNC programming (lathes and mills)
  • CMM programming
  • Conventional and advanced machine shop processes
  • Machine setup and operation (lathes, mills, CNCs)
  • Design for manufacturability optimization
  • Root cause analysis and quality problem-solving

Benefits

  • Competitive salary ($100k–$140k based on level and experience)
  • Stock options and long-term incentives
  • Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match options
  • 3 weeks paid vacation plus 10+ paid holidays annually
  • Paid parental leave and disability insurance

Likely interview questions

  • Describe your experience with CMM programming and metrology systems—what equipment have you used and what challenges did you solve?
  • Tell us about a time you identified an inspection bottleneck in a machine shop and how you improved throughput without sacrificing quality.
