Astro Mechanica
Mechanical Systems Engineer, Gearbox
About this role
Astro Mechanica seeks a Mechanical Systems Engineer to design, analyze, and validate high-speed gearbox and power transmission systems for advanced aerospace propulsion applications. You'll own the full lifecycle of transmission hardware development—from architecture through ground testing—collaborating across propulsion, aircraft, and test teams to deliver flight-ready systems.
What you'll do
- Design and architect high-speed geartrains with rotordynamic, lubrication, and interface optimization
- Perform gear calculations per AGMA/ISO standards including load capacity, contact stress, and fatigue analysis
- Conduct dynamic analysis of rotating systems using tools like KissSoft, Simcenter, SMT MASTA, and Ansys
- Design shafts, bearings, housings, and lubrication systems; establish subsystem testing for validation
- Specify qualification testing, analyze test data, and diagnose hardware/software issues
- Anchor and refine simulation models using historical and internally generated test data
What they're looking for
- Gearbox and transmission design (AGMA/ISO standards)
- Rotordynamics and vibration analysis
- Fatigue and stress analysis
- Dynamic simulation software (KissSoft, Simcenter, SMT MASTA, Ansys)
- Test instrumentation and data reduction
- Lubrication systems engineering
- Bearing and shaft design
- Technical problem-solving and root cause analysis
Benefits
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance with FSA
- 401(k) program and stock options
- Flexible time-off policy including PTO and paid holidays
- Flexible work environment
- Collaborative, flat-structure company culture
