About this role

Benchling seeks a senior software engineer to architect and lead critical systems for its biotech R&D platform, particularly around studies, workflows, and regulated laboratory operations. You'll own complex full-stack development, drive technical strategy across teams, and help shape how AI integrates into scientific workflows.

What you'll do

  • Architect and implement full-stack solutions for studies, workflows, procedures, and bioprocess/bioanalytical systems used in regulated (GLP/GMP) environments
  • Lead large multi-quarter initiatives by translating ambiguous scientific and regulatory requirements into concrete technical plans and delivery milestones
  • Serve as senior technical authority and force multiplier across the Applications division, setting engineering standards and influencing technical direction beyond immediate teams
  • Provide technical leadership through code review, architectural guidance, and mentorship of engineers at all levels
  • Make strategic technical decisions balancing platform leverage, deliberate technical debt, and long-term optionality
  • Explore opportunities to apply AI and LLMs to accelerate lab operations, SOP execution, and time-series data analysis

What they're looking for

  • Backend systems and cloud-based web application architecture
  • Full-stack development (frontend, backend, APIs)
  • Regulatory compliance and GLP/GMP requirements knowledge
  • AI/LLM integration and evaluation
  • Technical leadership and mentorship
  • Scientific domain understanding (biotech, molecular biology, lab workflows)
  • Large-scale system design and refactoring
  • Cross-functional collaboration and communication
