Software Engineer, Backend - Distributed Systems
About this role
Join Camunda's Distributed Systems team as a Senior Backend Engineer to design and build the durable, highly scalable streaming platform powering enterprise orchestration. You'll lead complex technical initiatives spanning multi-Raft consensus, cluster membership algorithms, and high-performance I/O pipelines while partnering across product, design, and operations.
What you'll do
- Design, build, and maintain backend services for a distributed streaming platform ensuring durability, high availability, and horizontal scalability
- Lead medium-to-large engineering initiatives (3+ months) end-to-end, translating business requirements into technical solutions and driving delivery
- Enhance disaster recovery and resilience capabilities including backup/restore APIs and multi-region/multi-tenant features
- Design developer and operator tooling to simplify troubleshooting and operation of complex distributed systems in production
- Collaborate with DevOps and core teams to improve CI, testing workflows, and local development experiences
- Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations, investigating production issues and feeding learnings back into the platform
