About this role

OpenAI seeks an experienced OT Network Engineer to design and scale controls and network architectures for high-density AI data centers. You'll define OT network strategies, develop reference architectures, and partner across teams to ensure resilient, secure infrastructure supporting advanced compute environments.

What you'll do

  • Design OT network architectures including topology, IP addressing, VLANs, routing, redundancy, and segmentation for AI data centers
  • Develop reference architectures, engineering standards, and design templates for controls and automation systems
  • Define integration patterns across multiple protocols (BACnet, Modbus, OPC UA, IEC-61850, MQTT, SNMP, NTP/PTP)
  • Lead technical evaluations of controls integrators, network suppliers, and commissioning agents
  • Support factory testing, site acceptance testing, failover validation, and integrated systems testing
  • Troubleshoot complex OT network issues including packet loss, latency, routing errors, and protocol incompatibilities

What they're looking for

  • OT network architecture and design for mission-critical environments
  • Layer 2 and Layer 3 network design (routing, VLANs, IP addressing, ACLs, segmentation)
  • Industrial redundancy protocols (PRP, HSR, RSTP/MSTP, ring topologies)
  • Industrial network equipment (Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, Rockwell Stratix, Siemens Ruggedcom)
  • Controls systems and industrial automation background
  • OT/IT boundary security and firewall policy design
  • Network troubleshooting and diagnostics
  • Multiple industrial protocols (BACnet, Modbus, OPC UA, IEC-61850, MQTT)

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through your experience designing OT network architectures for mission-critical environments. How did you approach segmentation, redundancy, and failure-domain isolation?
  • Describe a complex controls network troubleshooting scenario you've encountered—what tools and methodologies did you use to diagnose issues like latency, packet loss, or protocol incompatibilities?
