OpenAI
Network Operations Engineer, Network Activation
About this role
Lead the activation and troubleshooting of wide-area network circuits, fiber, and cloud interconnects across data centers, working hands-on with Layer 1 infrastructure while building automation to streamline circuit bring-up and handoff processes.
What you'll do
- Own Layer 1 activation and restoration for carrier circuits, dark fiber, wavelengths, and cloud interconnects across multiple data centers
- Troubleshoot optical faults including no-light, low-light, polarity, patching errors, and optics mismatches using optical test tools and provider data
- Reconcile complete circuit documentation: circuit IDs, demarcations, patch-panel positions, fiber pairs, cross-connects, and device ports
- Coordinate with carriers, cloud service providers, remote hands, and colocation teams to isolate issues and drive circuits to production readiness
- Guide technicians through targeted inspections, cleaning, optical power tests, OTDR/OLTS verification, and loopback procedures
- Build automation workflows that structure circuit data, ingest telemetry, generate diagnostics, and produce technician-ready instructions with human approval gates
What they're looking for
- Layer 1 optical networking and circuit troubleshooting
- Single-mode and multimode fiber, LC and MPO/MTP connectors, polarity, and high-speed optics (100G/400G/800G)
- Optical test equipment: power meters, VFL, OTDR, OLTS, DOM/DDM analysis
- Carrier activation, dark fiber, and cloud interconnect services (AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute, Google Cloud Interconnect)
- Scripting and API automation to streamline operational workflows
- Cross-functional coordination with remote hands, providers, and data-center teams
- Structured data management and documentation for infrastructure assets
- LLM-assisted diagnostics and human-in-the-loop process design
