Varda Space Industries
Spacecraft Embedded Software Engineer II
About this role
Varda seeks an Embedded Software Engineer II to develop and maintain reliable flight software for spacecraft, satellite buses, and reentry capsules operating in low Earth orbit. You'll own the complete software development lifecycle—from requirements and design through testing and on-orbit operations—working on safety-critical systems that enable in-space manufacturing.
What you'll do
- Develop and maintain firmware controlling spacecraft, satellite bus, and reentry capsule operations throughout the mission lifecycle
- Own complete software development process including design, testing, integration, and verification
- Capture requirements and perform design trades for open-ended technical problems
- Write structured embedded software in C++ for bare metal, RTOS, or Linux-based processors
- Design and implement highly reliable, available software systems
- Perform software testing, verification, and validation to ensure system quality and performance
What they're looking for
- C++ with strong language fundamentals
- Real-time embedded systems development and testing
- Spacecraft or safety-critical software development
- Bare metal, RTOS, and Linux embedded programming
- Requirements capture and design trade analysis
- Software verification and validation (V&V)
- Python or Rust (preferred)

Likely interview questions
- Describe a challenging spacecraft or safety-critical software project you led from requirements through flight operations—what was your approach to ensuring reliability?
- How do you approach testing and validation for embedded systems where failures could be catastrophic and you can't physically access hardware in orbit?
