About this role
Vast is hiring a Mechanical Engineer to design and develop structures for next-generation commercial space stations, including pressure hulls and shielding systems. You'll own structural design across the full development lifecycle, from concept through manufacturing and testing, while collaborating with subsystems and production teams.
What you'll do
- Own design of primary and secondary structures for large-scale space station systems
- Perform mechanical design analysis, generate manufacturing drawings, and develop test plans
- Evaluate static/dynamic loads, vibrations, thermal effects, and environmental factors to inform design
- Lead design trade studies and manage interfaces with subsystem teams
- Partner with fabricators and technicians to optimize designs and resolve manufacturing challenges
- Support hardware development across the entire project lifecycle
What they're looking for
- CAD software (NX preferred)
- FEA/structural analysis (Ansys, Femap/Nastran, or Abaqus)
- Mechanical design and component development
- GD&T and ASME Y14.5 standards
- Spacecraft design standards (SMC-S-016, NASA-STD-5001)
- Failure analysis and root cause investigation
- Teamcenter or similar PLM systems
- Understanding of static, dynamic, and thermal loads
