Mechanical Engineer – Drone Development, Design & Test

San Diego (Remote)$150k–$180kfulltimemidAdded today

About this role

Havoc seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and production transition of Locust, an advanced unmanned aircraft system, from prototype to DoD-ready platform. You'll own mechanical design, structural analysis, and system integration while collaborating across manufacturing, test, and government stakeholders to deliver a fieldable, reliably manufactured aircraft.

What you'll do

  • Design mechanical components, assemblies, structures, and mechanisms for unmanned aerial systems from concept through production release
  • Develop detailed 3D CAD designs and engineering drawings with tolerances and manufacturing documentation for production readiness
  • Build, assemble, and troubleshoot prototype vehicles and subsystems; work directly with vendors and machine shops on rapid hardware iteration
  • Perform structural, load, thermal, vibration, and tolerance analysis while balancing strength, weight, cost, and manufacturability
  • Develop and execute mechanical test plans including structural, environmental, durability, and system-level validation; diagnose failures and implement improvements
  • Support flight testing, vehicle-level integration, and cross-functional collaboration with electrical, autonomy, controls, and manufacturing teams

What they're looking for

  • 3D CAD design and detailed drafting
  • Mechanical design fundamentals (materials, fasteners, tolerancing, structures)
  • Structural and mechanical analysis (FEA, load, thermal, vibration)
  • Fabrication processes (CNC machining, sheet metal, composites, additive manufacturing)
  • Prototype assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of electromechanical systems
  • Test fixture design and mechanical validation testing
  • Design for manufacturability, assembly, and field serviceability
  • UAV/drone design or autonomous vehicle experience (preferred)
