xAI
Protection & Controls Engineer
About this role
SpaceXAI seeks a Protection & Controls Engineer to design, commission, and maintain electrical protection systems across transmission, distribution, generation, and battery storage infrastructure supporting critical facilities. Based in Memphis, TN, this role spans the full electrical system from utility interconnection through data center buses, requiring expertise in relay settings, coordination studies, and SCADA integration.
What you'll do
- Design protection philosophy, one-line diagrams, DC schematics, and relay panel layouts for electrical systems from utility to facility buses
- Calculate and maintain protective relay settings for transmission lines, transformers, feeders, generators, and battery storage systems
- Specify relays, current/voltage transformers, trip circuits, and communications-assisted protection schemes
- Perform short-circuit and coordination studies; conduct commissioning tests using industry tools like Doble and Omicron
- Analyze fault records and recommend setting changes; maintain settings database and firmware control
- Integrate protection with SCADA and RTUs using DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, and IEEE C37.118 protocols
What they're looking for
- Protective relay design and settings (SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens preferred)
- Short-circuit and coordination study software (ETAP, ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, SKM)
- Commissioning and testing equipment (Doble, Omicron, primary/secondary injection)
- SCADA/RTU integration and protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, synchrophasors)
- IEEE C37 standards and NERC PRC compliance
- Event record analysis and fault diagnostics
- Medium and high-voltage system design
- SELogic programming and settings management processes
