Software Engineer, Backend (Product)

New York (Remote)$170k–$300kfulltimemidAdded today

About this role

Clay is seeking a Backend Product Engineer to own complete product surfaces—from problem definition to shipped outcomes. You'll balance engineering and product responsibilities, building systems that power enrichment, signals, workflows, and AI agents while working closely with customers and cross-functional partners in a fast-paced, low-process environment.

What you'll do

  • Own product surfaces end-to-end, from scoping with design and GTM partners through shipping and measuring outcomes
  • Design data models, APIs, and background jobs that enable new product capabilities while maintaining performance at scale
  • Engage directly with customers through calls, support tickets, and observing real usage to inform backend decisions
  • Write technical specifications, make tradeoff decisions, and defend architectural choices
  • Iterate quickly with short development cycles, shipping functional versions for customer feedback rather than pursuing perfection
  • Collaborate with design, data science, and GTM teams to balance technical feasibility with product vision

What they're looking for

  • Backend systems design and architecture
  • API design and implementation
  • Data modeling and database optimization
  • Job scheduling and asynchronous processing
  • Performance optimization and scaling systems
  • Product thinking and customer empathy
  • Cross-functional collaboration
  • Rapid iteration and agile development

Benefits

  • Work on a product where engineering decisions directly impact customer value
  • Access to world-class coaches specializing in creativity and management
  • Opportunity to wear both engineering and product hats in a growing company
  • Exposure to a thriving community of 11,000+ customers and 30k Slack members
  • Competitive equity package at a $5B valuation company
